Carolyn,

Your comments concerning the American education system, which despite having many excellent colleges and univerities is not reaching those who need it most is sadly correct. The fact that most experts in literacy agree that appoximately 43 million Americans are functionally illiterate is sobering evidence of this.

Brava Carolyn,
Well stated Obama overview
I was impressed with the extensive indepth pre decision sessions he had with his top advisors & staff. Unlike the previous administrations shoot from the hip - must make a decision quickly mentality.
Appreciate your thoughts.
"We may deplore the madrasas of the Muslim world where boys endlessly chant the Koran, but they’re no more dangerous than many high schools in the West where the young who we failed to teach to read can barely manage their anger and contempt."

What a compelling and frightening thought
Carolyn, this tops anything I've read
concerning the very complex decision Obama
made. Hope you'll submit it to the editorial
page of the NYTimes.

Carolyn...You are so eloquent at expressing your thoughts which echo mine. I never saw the similarity in the anti-communism and the anti-Muslim extremist ideological views. By going into their territory to defeat them (if we can), we fuel their flames..and lose so much of our treasure..lives snuffed out...and they totally outnumber us. In bodies and fervor. I, too hope for the best....

Hi Carolyn--A long time ago, there was the Afghanistan principle for journalists covering foreign affairs, Since Afghanistan is furthest from the US of any country, it was deemed the country lest worthy of coverage. Now we are committed there as if it is Canada or western Eueope. And to announcea surge, but that it will last only a year and a half, is very, very strange.
Very, very strong, Carolyn, especially the comment re the folks in radioland for what it says about the country's understanding of what's going on. But it's all good and wonderfully thought out. Thanks. Phoebe
